“No mountain is too high; enough to be challenged to climb” Mike Katz
These words of wisdom are from the most underrated professional athlete in American history. He is an icon in the bodybuilding world. Along with the likes of Schwarzenegger and Ferrigno (the original Hulk) Mike helped introduce this nation to a sport few knew about. The famous documentary ‘Pumping Iron’ gave an inside look at this now famous sport with Mike playing a pivotal role. But few realize what Mike did before and after his decade in bodybuilding which helped shape his life and illustrious career. He was a feared all-pro football player in High School, College, and the New York Jets until an injury shortened his career. Most important, he dedicated a good portion of his life to teaching in the Junior and High Schools always inspiring kids along the way to be their best even as he trained for major competitions; including Mr. USA and Mr. Universe. Without a doubt, Mike offered me some of the best advice anyone has ever given me. There was no mention of obstacles he endured; only the people who helped him make it happen. The circle of mentors who inspired him with wisdom and discipline eliminated any doubt in his mind. This wasn’t a man who worried about obstacles, but someone who wanted to absorb as much knowledge as he could to grow. In my opinion, Mike’s philosophy is not the key to success, but a guaranteed success. What does Mike’s philosophy prove in a society where the majority shut themselves out from the outside world? It means you will miss your chance to experience success at the highest level. In other words, surround yourself with positive people that will help you achieve what you want. Open your heart, learn from other people, and leave your ego at the door. We all carry limitations, fears, and trauma in someway, but unless you control that useless space in your head these issues will always hinder your chances to accomplish your true dreams. If your life is not working you need to find out why! Try forming a power group of people like Mike did and watch your life change. The hardest part is to open up and let people in. Don’t worry about what people think, worry about what they have to offer. Just make sure that you offer them the same in return. As for Mike, he still teaches, but at his chain of fitness centers here in Connecticut. The lucky one’s who have the chance to train with this icon should realize and respect the knowledge he can offer. He didn’t market himself like everyone else, that’s just the way he is, which is unfortunate from this humble giant who inspired so many. He knows what he did and that’s all that matters. www.planetfitness.com (c) Jerry Maldonado all rights reserved
